In Between Spaces

Piazza Caprincia, Rome, Italy

2019

In Between Spaces was a design for Piazza Caprinica, a piazza dating back to the Renaissance. The free standing structure was designed to represent taste as one of the five senses. Human Behavior observations were made at three different times during the day. When designing this structure it was very important to include the history of the Piazza within the design. The shape of the structure creates an arch that surrounds the entrance of the church Chiesa di Santa Maria in Aquiro built in 1588. The placement of the structure draws emphasis to the entrance of the church. Sustainable materials such as glass, corks, and wine labels are included in the structure to showcase the historic winery located in the piazza. The different aspects of wine were incorporated to represent the sense that was assigned to the designer. The shape and thickness of the bench in the structure was taken from the interior columns of the church. The bench creates seating and the location draws people into the Piazza, creating a different path than before. The design was intended to take the history from the past and combine it with the modern shape of the present.
