HEALTHCARE

Community Counseling Consortium

Johnson City, TN

2020

Community Counseling Consortium is a center located on the fifth floor of Johnson City Medical Center. The center is directed towards patients with sleeping disabilities such as insomnia or sleep apnea. Before designing the space a lot of research was required. As the designer, I felt that the patients would feel more comfortable if the rooms looked like residential style rooms rather that the normal hospital rooms. I found that people with sleep disorders need a space that allows for their natural clock to be used, this is why the rooms have open windows that allow for natural light to come in in the mornings, however their are blackout curtains that can be used if the patients wants them. The room also has acoustical panels that are hidden behind the bookshelves that allow for minimal noise throughout the room. The head, located behind the bed allows for storage of wires and cables used while the studies are underway. The patient rooms also have bedside tables and dressers that make the room feel like a bedroom at home. The patients get their choice between two styles of rooms one being full of color and the other presenting a more neutral color pallet. The nurses station looks onto all of the patient room and the 3 counseling offices allow for personal conversations between the counselor and patient. The room provides an intimate and personal proxemic space. Hot Line Center allows for an office and a private apartment that allows for separate access to the worker. The Reception and Lobby area allow for the patients, families, and friends to interact with each other and the Seminar rooms give an area that allows for meetings and conventions within the consortium. The remanding space will allow for the center to grow in the future. Biophilic design is shown throughout the natural wood and the live greenery as in many studies it is proven to reduce stress and increase one's mental health.

When designing for Healthcare I learned that the environment patients are placed in can promote their health, so it is important to create a safe and healthy place where people can take the necessary steps to heal. Depending on the type of treatment the patients are receiving, determines the different elements the design will have in order to customize the design specifically towards the residents and employees.
